This document provides an analysis of the U.S. economic recovery with a focus on the hotel industry. It begins with an overview of U.S. recessions since 1929 and their duration. It then examines the hotel industry's performance relative to recessions, analyzing occupancy rates, average daily rates, revenue per available room, demand, and supply. Specific segments of the hotel industry, such as luxury, upper upscale, and economy are also analyzed. Graphs are provided to illustrate trends for these metrics during past recessions and recoveries. The document aims to provide insights and forecasts for the current recovery based on historical patterns.
The document analyzes economic indicators in Jamaica from 1989/90 to 2010/11. It shows that the exchange rate depreciated at annual rates of 14.67% from 1989 to 2007 and 5.2% from 2007 to 2011. Annual inflation averaged 19.68% from 1989 to 2007 and 11.68% from 2008 to 2011. Government domestic and total debt increased substantially over the periods analyzed, with domestic debt rising by 4,200% from 1990/91 to 2010/11. External debt also rose sharply.
Over the period from 1948 to 2009:
- The S&P/TSX provided positive returns about two-thirds of the time, with most returns between 0-10%.
- The largest negative return was in 2008 with a 33% decrease, followed by a record 35% increase in 2009.
- Negative returns have generally been followed by positive returns in subsequent years.

Generational Trends in Home Ownership: An Era of Renters?Nar Res
This document discusses generational trends in homeownership in the United States. It finds that homeownership rates have declined the most among younger generations like Millennials. While the Baby Boom generation experienced high rates of homeownership during their prime home-buying years, fewer Millennials are choosing to own homes compared to previous generations at the same age. This could reflect long-term generational shifts away from homeownership in the U.S. driven by rising housing costs and debt levels among younger people.
- The Canada Life dividend scale interest rate has historically been relatively stable compared to other financial instruments like stocks and bonds, due in part to smoothing gains and losses over time.
- Smoothing involves incorporating gains and losses into the dividend scale interest rate gradually over several years to help maintain stability.
- While the underlying asset performance can vary significantly year-to-year, Canada Life's conservative investment mix and long-term focus has contributed to reduced volatility in its dividend scale interest rate.
The document discusses trends in Japanese outbound tourism from 1985-2009. Some key points:
- Japanese outbound tourism grew 323% from 1986-2000 but has fallen 13% from 2001-2010.
- Australia's market share of Japanese tourists peaked at 5.6% in 1993 but had fallen to 2.1% by 2009, lower than 1985 levels.
- From 2006-2009 the overall Japanese outbound market fell 12% while Australia's market halved.
- China and Korea have increased their share of the Japanese outbound market from 26% in 2000 to 41% in 2009, taking customers from other destinations like Australia.
The document shows median year structures were built for various geographies in Hawaii according to the 2009 American Community Survey and 2000 Census. In general, median years are later for the 2009 data compared to 2000, with Honolulu County having the earliest median year of 1973. Specific places listed range from 1950 for Wheeler Air Force Base to 2000 for Puako.

The document contains various charts and graphs depicting economic and social trends in the United States from 1870 to 2010, including real GDP per capita, life expectancy, the elderly population, divorce and unmarried birth rates, and deaths from major diseases. It shows that real GDP per capita has increased dramatically over time from around $5,000 in 1870 to over $45,000 by 2010. Several charts illustrate improvements in life expectancy, decreases in death rates from diseases like tuberculosis and influenza, and changes in family structure such as rising divorce and unmarried birth rates.

A 'Plan B' for Food Security - The water variability connection, by Jan Lundq...Global Water Partnership
This document discusses critical issues around climate change, food security, and water resources in South Asia. It focuses on developing alternative strategies ("Plan B") to solely increasing food production, given uncertainties from climate change, population growth, and other factors. Specifically, it argues for reducing post-harvest losses and food waste by 50% as a more sustainable approach ("9th MDG") compared to production-focused plans. The document provides statistics and examples to support developing complementary strategies around food storage, transport, markets, and consumption patterns.
Via Christi Women's Connection: Breast Cancer Management in 2012Via Christi Health
This document discusses breast cancer trends, risks, screening recommendations, and advances in treatment. It notes that breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, with nearly 300,000 new cases per year in the US. Screening and early detection have increased survival rates over the past decade. While mammography screening is effective, some guidelines recommend beginning annual screening at age 50 rather than 40 due to the higher number of women needed to be screened to save one life at younger ages. The sequencing of the human genome project in 2003 and exponential growth of scientific knowledge have led to increases in targeted therapy options. While breast conservation is often possible, mastectomy is still required in some cases such as with BRCA mutations or extensive disease.
Electoral Consequences of Unemployment ExperiencesThorsten Faas
Unemployment experiences, perceptions of the economy, attributions of responsibility, and their electoral consequences were examined. Unemployment was studied not just as a discrete individual characteristic, but also as it relates to social networks and regional/national contexts. Unemployment negatively impacted perceptions of individual and national economic situations. Responsibility for economic problems was attributed based on defensive/contextual factors and partisanship. Unemployment experiences and negative economic perceptions led to lower government approval and influenced voting behavior.
1) The document discusses Asia's economic growth and integration over the past few decades as well as potential challenges going forward, including decoupling from other regions.
2) It notes that Asia's share of global GDP growth has significantly increased since the 1970s as emerging Asian economies have rapidly developed.
3) However, ongoing trade tensions and a potential decoupling of certain countries from integrated global supply chains could pose economic risks for Asia in the future.

Grown Up Digital: The Net Generation and the Future of InnovationX PRIZE Foundation
The document discusses four key drivers of change: Web 2.0, the Net Generation, the social revolution, and the economic revolution. It describes how new technologies and a new generation of "digital natives" are embracing collaboration and sharing through social networks and user-generated content. This is enabling new models of open innovation, citizen engagement, and mass collaboration that will transform business and society. However, established institutions are struggling to adapt to these paradigm shifts, representing both opportunities and challenges during a time of global crisis.
1. The document discusses Erwin Rode's presentation on economic prospects for South Africa and the world.
2. Rode predicts that world and European growth will remain poor for many years, around 10 years, due to the ongoing financial crisis.
3. For South Africa, Rode forecasts lower growth in the coming years as a result of weak global growth and infrastructure constraints domestically, although China may provide some support. Taxes and tariffs are also expected to rise.
